  • About Winters Fruit Tree
Starting in the prime agricultural valley of Santa Clara… the Winters Fruit Tree business began over 100 years ago. Winters Fruit Tree is a small family farm, now situated near the coastal foothills of Northern California. Dedicated to preserving a tradition of small family farming, the farm continues to hold strong values of sustainability in California that has rapidly changed in the last century.

We continue to honor our roots and history in California by continuing a tradition that is becoming increasingly rare.

  • Sustainable Farming
Small sustainable farming is more important now than ever as we see the impact that climate change and “growth” has on the environment. In order to keep trees healthy, Phil looks at each tree individually and not necessarily actual rows as a whole. Using sustainable methods and only using oil based sprays (organic) when needed, this limits overall use of even organic sprays. When things are looking good some crops go without sprays depending on the year.

His philosophy is that trees need to be taken care of in every way possible before the problem begins and that means keeping the trees healthy. By focusing on perfecting tree maintenance such as pruning, irrigation, soil health, thinning and mowing, crops are healthier and don’t require additional management.

Diversity on a farm is also important for sustainable farming. We use our compost for fertilizer and having a mixture of plants and trees keeps the bees healthy and on site longer. Having animals on our orchard such as our turkeys, (and the wild turkeys that invited themselves into our property 😉) helps keep bugs out and the soil at the top as class type 1.

Biodiversity is more important now than ever as building continues to eradicate land diversity and industrial mono cropping continues to take over small scale farming. Our 6 acres on our Winters property is a healthy haven for the birds and animals. Sometimes looking at it and what it is now surrounded by, doesn’t make sense but somehow it’s still here and that’s what counts. It’s our way of saying that the land and health of the land is more important than anything else.
